More comments from my friend, J.D. Smith: "If you have a deep open well, put what you want to keep cool into a bucket on a rope. Secure the rope and put it down the well, making sure that you don't hit the water in the well. It should be above the water. Most people don't have an open well, so a spring house was another way to keep food. Spring water is very cold and will keep your things cold. The spring house does not need to be very big. A four by four by three feet is big enough."
